5 reasons to get excited about the Winter Olympics 2018

Date: 16th November 2017 | Categories: News, Travel

The biggest event on the winter sports calendar is almost upon us and we are giddy with excitement! We wanted to share 5 reasons why the Pyeongchang 2018 Olympics might just be the best one yet…

1) Team GB’s best olympics yet?

We are ready to send 60 of our best and brightest over to Asia to compete in the most famous event in world, and this year we really think it might be our successful year yet! With the record of 4 medals at the 2014 Sochi and 1924 Chamonix games to beat, the target is a tough one, but Bill Sweeney, cheif exec of the BOA reckons, “This is the strongest team we have ever had for a Winter Olympics.”

Here are some our top Skiers and Snowboarders to get excited about!

Katie Ormerod

2) Katie Ormerod

Known as Katie O, she is a natural snowboarder. On the slopes since the age of 3, she became the youngest girl in the world to land a double backflip at the age of 15!
Then at 16 she became the worlds first female to backside double cork 1080! (don’t know what that is? – it’s worth seeing!

Katie has already won the Big Air World Cup in Russia this year and taken 2nd and 3rd in Big Air events in Germany and S.Korea. So she is on great form and looking to take the podium in Pyeongchang!

Dave Ryder - Team GB

3) Dave Ryding

2017 was quite the year for Dave! After taking GBs first podium position in the Ski World Cup for 36 years with a slalom silver in Kitzbuhel in January. He has continued to perform at the top level in all events since.
It’s been a very long time since we have had such a talented Alpine skier and we think Dave has what it takes to debunk the myth that the Olympic podium is a no-go area for British skiers.

Billy Morgan

4) Billy Morgan

Another Big Air athlete is Billy Morgan, the southampton gymnast turned snowboarder has been consistently in the top 10 of Big Air Athletes since 2012.

Billy has taken his knowledge of acrobatics and applied it to snowboarding with flair! He was the first person in the world to land a QUADRUPLE Cork, that’s right…4 whole flips..you have to see it to believe it!

James 'Woodsy' Woods

5) James Woods

James ‘Woodsy’ Woods has been at home on the podium since 2007 as the 5 time British National Slopestyle champion. With the peak of his success thus far coming in 2017, he was the first Brit to ever take a Winter X Games gold in the Big Air competition, and then went on to take a Bronze in the Slopestyle at the Europe X Games and World Championship.

Will Woodsy be the first brit to take a gold in freestyle skiing at the Olympics? We certainly think he has what it takes!
