Vail has a total skiable area of 5,289 acres with 1,627 acres on the front side, 3,017 acres in the back bowls and 645 acres in Blue Sky Basin. Best morning run, Riva Ridge – get it while it’s at its best. One of Vail’s signature runs, this is a 4-mile long, twisting descent that is frequently groomed top to bottom. It’s not suited to beginners but will be an enjoyable test for intermediates to advanced intermediates. Another great choice, especially if you’re heading to Lionshead, is the Simba trail, which has great views across the Vail Valley and is rarely crowded.
Insiders tip, if you don’t mind an early journey, start the day by going straight to Blue Sky Basin, then work your way back towards the west. Blue Sky Basin takes visitors on a brush with nature not found at most modern mountain resorts.
Los Amigos, in Vail Village, a lot of people head to this restaurant/bar. Situated at the bottom of the slopes looking back up the mountain, with a margarita or beer in hand you can check out the form of those finishing the day. Garfinkel’s, if you’re in Lionshead the routine is much the same at Garf’s, except you can spin the famed shot wheel, which chooses the kind of shot you’ll be downing with all your new best friends. Other notable spots for Apres, The Red Lion off Bridge Street in Vail Village. It’s an iconic Vail bar that dates back to the villages early days. Altitude Bar & Grill located in the Evergreen Lodge, very much a bar goers bar. And of course Vendettas that sits across from The Red Lion. Great drinks and great food, especially the pizza.
When it comes to nightlife visitors are never short of entertainment when cruising down Bridge Street in Vail Village. The Red Lion will have live music on Fridays and Saturdays and is a great place to take in the New Year when traveling over the holiday. For those looking to dance the night away head to Bridge Street Bar. One side having more of an upbeat vibe with a live DJ, the other side of the bar having a casual feel with live acoustic performances. A favorite spot for locals and all visitors who are seeking live music, apres ski, happy hour and nightlife is Shakedown Bar located at the top of Bridge St. just east of the fountain. Owned and operated by a local family with a passion for music, they only bring the top performers in the vail valley and even the nation, and their house band will provide world class entertainment as well.
