Meet the Team – Q and A with Paul
Paul is as passionate about skiing as he is about business, so it always seemed fated that the two would meet! After nurturing Rental Republic from humble beginnings he is leading the charge in reimagining how ski hire is thought about.
Paul shares his story about his life and how Rental came to be what it is today…
Q: Tell us about yourself? Where did you grow up, when did you start skiing? Were you learning to walk on the slopes or a late bloomer?
A: A late bloomer! I grew up in the east midlands of England and was not from a skiing family so I discovered mountain sports in my late twenties! Initially learning to snowboard I then progressed to skiing by which time (my mid thirties) my children were learning with me! In Some respects it has been an advantage (not for my skiing technique) but certainly when setting up the Republic. Coming at it from a customers perspective meant we really understood what customers wanted.
Q: Tell us about when you had the idea to start Rental Republic? What was the idea behind it?
A: Skiing can be challenging in many ways, travelling, early starts, luggage to carry, unfamiliar language and customs to overcome. When we started the Republic we knew that we could help by delivering great customer service and ensuring that the ski hire element of your holiday is as easy as possible. We can provide ski hire by the fire in your accommodation, you relax while we do the rest.
Q: Rental Republic is available in dozens of resorts and even the USA and Canada, where did you start and how did it grow?
A: Our spiritual home was Montchavin/Les Coches and we started out from our garage supplying skis to friends chalets and grew from there.
Customer service has remained our focus and people rarely chose to go back to walking to the shop once they have tried our service. This has meant we enjoy high retention rates and have been able to grow on the back of clients asking us to follow them to new resorts each year!
We are super pleased to be part of the world’s first transatlantic ski hire delivery network and to have launched in Chamonix this year!
Q: Outside of Rental Republic what do you most enjoy doing?
A: Eating, family and rugby.
A great day could be; A morning skiing the trees, lunch with the family and an afternoon spent watching a Six Nations rugby match!
